DAT is designed to back up tape as a popular format. Referred in audio/video terminology, DAT means that Video CD has in its SEGMENT or MPEGAV directories. With additional information and certain specific file structure, all of the DAT files are on basis of MPEG-1. However, you have to convert them back to "real" MPEG-1 files, for they are now real ones. As a result, most software players are able to treat them as regular MPEG-1 files.
